Don’t Change Your Diet Just Increase Your Fiber

A study by researchers from the UMMS (University of Massachusetts Medical School) found that the simple addition of fiber to your daily diet can greatly increase weight loss.

Yunsheng Ma, MD, PhD, lead author of the study, and associates found that adding fiber to your current diet will accost the same results as participants complied with the American Heart Association’s (AHA) somewhat rigid dieting recommendations.

Subjects that complied with the AHA diet did see stronger weight loss results although Dr. Ma states the results are “not statistically significant”. Using a much simpler approach and adding fiber gave participants comparable results to the AHA dieters.

Subjects on the AHA diet as well as the high fiber diet both experienced lower blood pressure and showed improvement in insulin resistance and fasting insulin which could result in reduced risk of diabetes.

“A high fiber diet can be filling and tasty, making it a pleasure to eat while losing weight and improving health and wellbeing,” said Barbara Olendzki, RD, MPH, assistant professor of medicine and co-investigator on the study.

Aim for daily 38 grams of fiber from foods that are naturally high in fiber and your results should equal those on a much stricter diet.
